What It Is

The Box of Rain (BoR) is a mobile hygiene clinic that delivers essential services directly to Austin’s homeless population. Conceived as a response to the COVID-19 outbreak, BoR promotes social distancing and reduces travel in the homeless community by delivering services outdoors and to many locations throughout the city. As many regular resources are slowing down or grinding to a halt, BoR meets the growing needs of our friends experiencing homelessness by delivering the following resources:

  • showers/toilets
  • hygiene/first-aid/harm-reduction supplies
  • clothes
  • food

The BoR also continues to apply TOOF’s proven Workforce First employment model: It is run by a team of people experiencing homelessness who are paid $15/hr to oversee and execute operations.

The Box or Rain runs Sun-Fri, 9am-2pm (while supplies last) at the following locations:

  • Monday – Sunrise Baptist Church (Menchaca and Ben White Blvd)
  • Tuesday – HWY 183 and Burnet Rd
  • Wednesday – HWY 183 and Cameron Ln
  • Thursday – Under IH35 (Directly across the service road from CommUnity Care)
  • Friday – Pack Saddle Pass & 71
  • Sat – Closed
  • Sun – Closed

We also have a trailer at the State-sanctioned encampment on Hwy 183 open daily, 8am – 1pm.

We have recently partnered with the Austin’s Parks and Recreation and Public Health departments to operate three other shower trailers around the city at the following locations and times:

  • 7th and IH-35 open 9am-1pm Mon-Fri
  • Slaughter Creek (Underneath the bridge of Slaughter and Menchaca) open 9am-2pm Mon-Fri
  • University United Methodist Church (24th and Guadalupe) open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 8am-1pm
